Helsinki’s Kinopalatsi opened in 1998 and has the distinction of being Finland’s first multiplex cinema. The building was originally a 1,000-seat theater, the Metropol, which opened in 1939. Today, the Kinopalatsi has ten theaters and more than 1,600 seats. Inside the theater, mahogany pillars and mirrored walls remind guests of the glamorous 1930s, while cutting-edge technology and comfortable seats provide moviegoers with a modern entertainment experience.
Finland’s oldest theater is Helsinki’s Maxim. When Maxim opened in 1909 it was known as Olympic and boasted 450 seats. Maxim was renovated several times throughout the years, adding air conditioning in the 1970s and new machinery in 1997. There are currently two screens at Maxim and a total of 601 seats. The smaller screening room contains original gilded reliefs and is protected by Finland’s National Board of Antiquities.
The most modern theater in Finland is Helsinki’s Tennispalatsi. This theater was the first in the world to offer THX and SDDS as standard equipment in all screening rooms. Guest comfort is one of Tennispalatsi’s main goals, which is made obvious in the auditoriums. Seats are designed and arranged so that every patron will have an unobstructed view of the screen. Guests will not have to worry about legroom either. There is more than one meter of space between rows, enabling guests to stretch out and relax. Tennispalatsi boasts 14 screening rooms and nearly 2,700 seats.
Tennispalatsi is more than just a movie theater. Guests who want to do more than simply watch a movie can eat a meal or shop at Tennispalatsi. The building also houses several small cafes, restaurants and shops. For a truly memorable day, guests can also visit Tennispalatsi’s art museum.
